Use the undiluted essential oil as an antiseptic, mild sedative and painkiller, particularly on insect bites, stings and small (cooled) burns. Add 6 drops to hot bath water to calm irritable children, and place 1 drop on the temple for headache relief. For enervation, nervous exhaustion, anxiety, excess stress and even cancer, lavender oil baths with Epsom salts (2 cups per tub) are very beneficial. Lavender baths can also help fight fungal infections in children and adults. Lavender oil can be blended for use as a massage oil in aromatherapy. The diluted oil can be applied topically for throat infections, skin sores, inflammation, rheumatic aches, anxiety, insomnia and depression. It can also be massaged into the chest, with a little chamomile oil added, for asthmatic and bronchial spasm. Other uses for lavender oil include the following: add a few drops of oil to a little water or Silver Shield for sunburn or scalds; massage diluted oil into the temples and name of the neck for tension headaches or at the first hint of a migraine; apply undiluted oil to insect bites and stings; dilute 10 drops in 25 ml carrier oil for sunstroke (Note: this is not an effective sun block); and add a few drops of the oil to a chamomile-based cream for eczema. Dilute in water and apply rinse to hair for lice.
WARNINGS:
Not recommended in cases of clinical depression. Skin to which lavender oil or salves/lotions containing lavender has been applied should no be exposed to sunlight, because lavender is photo-reactive and will bleach and blotch the skin.
