INDICATIONS:

Detoxify/Cleansing is an herbal formula that facilitates a systemic (full body) cleansing. Many of these herbs have a long tradition of use in naturopathic medicine for many toxic conditions. Using Detoxify/Cleansing will result in blood and tissue cleansing through stimulating the organs that do this innately, including the liver, urinary tract, skin, lymph and bowels. Herbs do not really cleanse the blood and tissues but instead, stimulate the organs to increase the rate in which they do this naturally. Detoxify/Cleansing will help in the elimination of cellular metabolic waste (uric acid, lactid acid..), dietary toxemia and environmental toxins. It is indicated for internally and externally generated toxins. Detoxify helps stimulate organs that eliminate the toxemia from drug usage. It can be used in larger more frequent doses if a faster cleanse if desired, or in moderate doses for a slower cleanse. Faster cleanses can result in more uncomfortable acute healing symptoms that might not be desired, but are usually harmless (i.e., loose stool, nausea, headaches, skin discharges). If this occurs, decrease the dose or pace.

Detoxify works best if other cleansing protocols are followed, such as dietary changes, increasing water consumption and exercise.

Detoxify/Cleansing is a synergistic formula which has herbs that exert effect on different cleansing organs:

• Liver: Oregon Grape, Burdock, Yellow Dock, Dandelion and Red Root
• Urinary Tract: Burdock, Dandelion Root
• Lymph: Red Root, Clover
• Skin: Red Clover, Burdock, and Yellow Dock
• Small Intestines: Yellow Dock
• Large intestines (colon): Yellow Dock
• Blood: Red Clover, Nettles (through blood buffer building)
• Circulation: Ginger

These herbs will increase bile from the liver for fat digestion and HCI from the stomach for protein digestion and therefore assist those who need digestive enzymes. As a consequence of increased innate digestive enzyme output, peristalsis will increase to help assist normal healthy bowel function. It is not so much a laxative as a regulating agent for sluggish bowels.

There is a trend in Thompsonian based American Herbalism to think that a cleanse may help to heal everything. This is naïve as many degenerative and wasting diseases require an anabolic or building effort instead of a catabolic or eliminative approach like cleansing. On the other hand, many people benefit greatly from cleaning up their life and using Detoxify/Cleansing is a perfect compliment.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS AND CAUTIONS:

Pregnancy and Nursing

Do not use if already acutely detoxing, especially if acutely detoxing from addictions such as alcohol. Be careful if liver enzymes are elevated by going slowly.

Aggressive detoxification and herbal liver stimulants may increase the rate of metabolic breakdown of some medications, especially those medications that are broken down in the liver. This can create an undesirable situation where medications are not working (i.e. beta blockers, anti-depressants) and Detoxify/Cleansing would be contraindicated. One may need to adjust the dosage of such medications while working with their health care professional.
